History

The most successful Drag Racing Team in the history of Australian Championship Drag Racing is Jim Read Racing Team; let us introduce you to JRR. Jim Read has been a drag racer since 1966.

Jim's career has been one of constant achievement, with almost more titles than he can count, including 17 National Championships and 16 Australian Championships, 10 Winternationals, NSW Championships, Grand Finals, USA V Australia and Australia V New Zealand Match racers, plus many, many more. He's held numerous ANDRA records, including the first drag racer to break the seven-second barrier, the six- second barrier, the five-second barrier record and then, the first racer to record a speed of over 300 mph (483 kmh) on the quarter-mile in Australia.

In 1982, Jim competed in the United States of America at the Winternationals event in Pomona California. With a small budget and a borrowed race car Jim Read was the first Australian to become Top Fuel ‘Top Qualifier’ at an NHRA event. Jim Read is the only Australian drag-racer listed in the Guiness Book of Records, the only motor sport recipient issued with an Advance Australia Ambassor award and most recently Jim was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his achievements in Australian Sport from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and presented by the Australian Prime Minister the Hon. John Howard.

After six years of negotiating with the NSW Government Jim Read achieved one of his greatest successes with the building of the newest and safest motor racing venue in Australia. Now as CEO of the Western Sydney International Dragway (WSID), Jim continues serving the drag racing community in bringing Championship Drag Racing back to Sydney and its new home at WSID.

With the continued support of his long term sponsors, including Auto One, Snap on Tools, Fuchs Lubricants, Wynn’s and MTU Detroit Diesel, Jim Read Racing continues to break records and remains Australia's most successful Championship Drag Racing team. Jim's son Phil handles the teams driving duties and has already achieved record times of 4.61 seconds and the speed record of 325mph (523kph) over the quarter mile track and won the 2005-2006 Australian Top Fuel Championship.
